A town set on a ridge between two of the most important monasteries in Sikkim, i.e. the Pemayangtse and the Sangachoeling, Pelling is a favoured destination for many reasons. Its place in history, culture and religion of the region draws half the visitors while the other half are attracted by its pristine beauty, soothing natural ambiance and its proximity to various waterfalls - like the Kanchenjunga and the Sangay - and beautiful rivers - like the Rimbi. Of course, the greatest crowd puller is the looming presence of the Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world, which is clearly visible from this tiny town. With just a few star-rated hotels in Pelling, this isn’t necessarily a destination for the luxury traveller. However, Pelling offers its fair share of contemporary comforts and can be visited by everyone. A base for day hikes and soft treks as well as tough high altitude treks, Pelling is a favourite amongst mountaineers and trekkers. While trekkers use it as a base camp for those weeklong expeditions to Dzongri and for conquering sky-piercing mountain peaks, families and couples enjoy taking nature walks and soaking in the views of the snow-white Kanchenjunga Range.
The good-natured locals are friendly and will let you get close and experience their lifestyles. We also suggest a fishing trip to the Rimbi River, or maybe a lesson in milking cows from a local.
